Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 00:04:50 GMT

With graduation season winding down, now may be a good time to refocus attention towards those who are earlier in the process — the ones saving for the ever-increasing cost of higher education.According to the Education Data Initiative, the average annual cost for public in-state, four-year institutions is $25,707; the cost for out-of-state students who attend public colleges is $44,014; and four-year private colleges come in at an average of $54,501 per year.Although many families are not paying the full sticker price, they still try to squirrel away some money to help defray future costs. For these folks, I continue to recommended the 529 Plan – and for the record, I did so BEFORE the advent of 5-29 Day (get it, May 29 is 5/29!), a prompt that states use to highlight participation in 529 education savings programs with various incentives. As a primer, as state and federal money for higher education dried up in the 1980s and ’90s, the onus was on families to absorb higher costs...

DC Water says a 12-inch water main ruptured under V Street NE on Sunday, causing a pressure drop. (Courtesy DC Water)Parts of Northeast D.C. are being advised to boil their water before drinking or cooking, after a broken main led to a pressure drop late Sunday.D.C. Water said crews worked overnight to mend a ruptured 12-inch pipe under V Street NE, between 33rd Street and South Dakota Avenue. The provider issued the boil notice on Sunday evening after residents of the Fort Lincoln, Woodridge and Langdon neighborhoods reported a partial or total loss of water pressure.A reduction in pressure can increase the chance of the water being contaminated by disease-causing organisms. The utility said it would take samples on Monday and Tuesday, and that it might be able to end the advisory on Wednesday if no contamination is found.“We have no information that the water was contaminated by this incident, but issue this advisory as a precaution while we test the water,” the adviso...

ATHENS — Greece’s parliament was dissolved Monday, less than 24 hours after convening, paving the way for a new election on June 25.Under a decree signed by Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, caretaker Prime Minister Ioannis Sarmas and Cabinet ministers, the next parliament will convene on July 3.No party achieved an overall majority in the national election on May 21, which was held under a simple proportional representation system; there was no attempt to form a coalition. The conservative New Democracy party achieved a landslide victory, getting 40.79 percent of the vote — but that was not enough to form a single-party government. The next election will be contested under a different system that grants the winning party up to 50 bonus parliamentary seats; that gives the conservative New Democracy an edge to form a majority government. However, the number of parties that make it into parliament will be crucial to determining the makeup of the eventual majority.
