BEIRUT (AP) — The U.S. military said they attacked a cargo ship in the Red Sea, killing several of them in an escalation of the maritime conflict linked to the war in Gaza.In a series of statements, the U.S. Central Command said the crew of the USS Gravely destroyer first shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired at the Singapore-flagged Maersk Hangzhou late Saturday after the vessel reported getting hit by a missile earlier that evening as it sailed through the Southern Red Sea. Four small boats then attacked the same cargo ship with small arms fire early Sunday and rebels tried to board the vessel, the U.S. Navy said. Next, the USS Gravely and helicopters from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier responded to the Maersk Hangzhou's distress call and issued verbal warnings to the attackers, who responded by firing on the helicopters.“The U.S. Navy helicopters returned fire in self-defense,” sinking three of the four boats and killing the people on board while the fou...

You might be driving wrong on icy roads

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:01:21 GMT

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has been a relatively mild start to winter for much of the U.S., but it won't be long until many of us encounter icy roads (if you haven't already this season). "It's been a while since we have been able to do that and … it's definitely scary, you know, definitely got to make sure the tires are good," driver Lorenzo Brown Jr. told Nexstar's KELO after South Dakota was hit by some winter weather earlier this week.Even for the most seasoned winter driver, it is important to take extra precautions when roads are snowy and icy."So I see it quite often, people jackrabbit start from the stoplights — you got to quit that. Nice, easy acceleration. Let your car warm up just so you're comfortable and can think without freezing while you're driving," Airway Auto Service owner Tom Broadbent explained when asked about driving in winter weather. Do you actually need to let your car warm up in winter? While many people learned to pump their brakes when stopping on i...

Real World Economics: 2023: It was a very odd year

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:01:21 GMT

In summing up economic issues and events, one might begin with the year followed by a colon and a catchy subtitle. But what adage, catchy or trite, for the year just ending? How about the following?Edward Lotterman2023: The best of times, the worst of times.2023: The gathering storm.2023: What the hell (or heck) were we thinking?2023: It can’t get much worse, but it will before it gets better.2023: The relative calm before the storm.Take your choice or coin your own, but few people would mimic Frank Sinatra or Michael Jackson and say, “2023: It was a very good year!”It is clear that the period from 2020 through 2025 will go down in U.S. history as critical ones for our society, our economy and our democracy. But we may not understand exactly why and how for a long time. When recently-deceased Henry Kissinger made his covert flight to China in 1971, there was a tea break in the negotiations. The participants were all well-schooled in history and a debate broke out over the effects of ...

Opinion: Santa Clara County’s population is aging

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:01:21 GMT

As we navigate the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook the importance of support services for our older adults. But it’s a conversation we need to have. Whether it’s health check-ups, assistance with daily tasks or a helping hand when they need it, support services for seniors are vital.By 2030, more than 400,000 Santa Clara County residents will be age 65 and up, making up one-fifth of the population and outnumbering children for the first time. During my time on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, I’ve pushed for a number of initiatives that support our senior population. Most recently, I asked that our county assess the needs and capacity of caregivers providing in-home support services to older adults. The report that came back to our board was eye-opening. Not only do we have a massive shortage of caregivers that will quickly get worse if we don’t step up, but there’s not adequate support for the caregivers we already have.Last year, my co...
