In 3-2 loss to Jets, Marc-Andre Fleury plays a bittersweet thousandth NHL game

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:46:29 GMT

Staring down his 1,000th career NHL appearance on Saturday night, Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury told reporters in Winnipeg he was eager “to be over with it.”“It’s been talked about a bunch,” he said after playing the third period in a 4-2 loss to the Jets. So, when Fleury was celebrated with a small solo skate in his own end Sunday during a first-period TV timeout, it was an awkward turn of events for the veteran, who generally gets Wild rookies to take their traditional solo skate around the rink before their first NHL games.Asked if he had one of those before his first NHL start on Oct. 10, 2003, Fleury said, “I don’t think it was a thing then.”After talking about this milestone for most of the past few weeks, and in just about every stop the Wild have made during that time, Fleury finally became the fourth NHL goaltender to play 1,000 games on Sunday, a bittersweet achievement after the Wild lost to the Winnipeg Jets, 3-2, at Xcel Energy Center.Fleury, 39, was good, stopping 2...

If there was any doubt as to whether the 49ers have themselves one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks, it was erased Sunday on two plays within two minutes of each other in a 27-10 road win over the Washington Commanders. It’s first-and-10, and the 49ers have the ball at their own 44-yard line. Purdy takes a shotgun snap and delivers a strike to Brandon Aiyuk for a 38-yard gain. They used to be called dimes. The 49ers call them dots. The coverage wasn’t bad, but it didn’t matter. Kurtenbach: Clinching the No. 1 seed early is exactly what the doctor ordered for the 49ers

How much better are the 49ers than the rest of the NFC?San Francisco didn’t need a full regular season to clinch the conference’s top playoff seed. The Niners, by pairing their own 27-10 win over Washington with an improbable Arizona Cardinals win over the Eagles, clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs Sunday, giving them home-field advantage up to the Super Bowl and a coveted playoff bye week.Oh, and by clinching the top seed with a week of the regular season still to be played, the Niners effectively picked up another bye week in the process. That’s not a bad way to end the year. It’s also downright domination over the competition — the kind that, even with all his success, we haven’t seen in Kyle Shanahan’s tenure as the 49ers’ head coach.Sure, there was a bit of luck involved in the process. The 49ers huddled in front of cell phones and a small TV in the corner of the visitor’s locker room to watch the Cardinals, a 13-point under...
